Steven Spielberg produced this underwhelming 1986 effort at a slapstick spin on Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The pre-Oscar Tom Hanks stars with Shelley Long as a married couple whose efforts to finish construction on their home are sabotaged by costly and sporadically funny accidents. The unfinished domicile becomes a metaphor for their troubled relationship, as evidenced by Long's character's attraction to a madman violinist (Alexander Godunov). Hanks is the only reason at this point to check this film out. Richard Benjamin (My Favorite Year) directs but with no flair or distinction. --Tom Keogh.

 Best Rock and Roll Performance on a Film Award January 4, 2009
Not only is this early Tom Hanks movie great, but it features a little known band at the time named White Lion. Yep, with an female backup singer too. After the first label dropped them, before taking off with Pride, they were in the Money Pit.
 Hilarious and Underrated December 23, 2008
I will never understand why this movie was underrated by the critics or anyone. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Just thinking about this movie puts a smile on my face and whenever I need a pick me up or a laugh this is one that I turn to. Tom Hanks and Shelley Long start out as the sweetest, most loving couple, and the trials and tribulations they go through trying to fix up their house would test anyone. Hank's facial expressions and reactions to the problems around him, and Long's attempts to be patient and understanding become hysterical as they struggle to stick together until the house is completed. I could watch this movie once a week and never tire of it, and I laugh until I cry when Hank comes from the kitchen charred and disheveled and when she asks 'what happened'? and he meekly says shaking his head 'it can't hurt us any more', and then the turkey flies out of the exploding oven and soars through the upstairs bathroom and the popper pops up and Shelly happily says 'turkey's done'. I just bought Peter Sellers' 'The Party' - and to me 'The Money Pit' is far funnier. Maybe humor is funniest when we can relate to it or it speaks to us. I love the Money Pit and I thank all those who worked so hard to create that movie and to entertain us.

This is a very good early Tom Hanks movie. At times it tries to turn into a movie about relationships, but the best parts are the gags about the house that turns into a nightmare. There are scenes and lines that will have you laughing until you cry. It is definitely worth owning a copy of this on DVD. It's the kind of movie you can watch many times and still enjoy.

This has been one of my favorite movies of all times since i was about [...] old. It is so funny and Tom Hanks and Shelley Long make a perfect duo in this film. it is a great movie for the whole family and I give it two thumbs up!!!
